Type Identification - Week 5

Futura + Kabel

Futura and Kabel are both sans serif fonts. The both utilize sharp peaks in their W's, N's, M's. They both have a consistent line weight. Some of the ascenders and descenders in Kabel have an angle at the top. Also, Kabel has a larger ascender height.

Type Identification - Week 4

Rockwell + Baskerville

Rockwell and Baskerville are both serif fonts. The bracketing on Baskerville is curvilinear. Rockwell has a slab serif, meaning there aren't any brackets. There is a nice use of modulation in Baskerville. Rockwell has a consistent line weight. Both the upper and lower case "j" in Baskerville have ball serifs: Rockwell does not. 

Type Identification - Week 3

Caslon + Garamond

Caslon and Garamond are both serif fonts. They both have long serifs. Caslon appears to be more angular and precise. Garamond's brackets have an unusual slope. The crossbars in Garamond are thicker than those in Caslon. The serif on the lowercase "i" in Caslon is very triangular; Caslon's is curvilinear.

Type Identification - Week 2

Helvetica + Gill Sans

Helvetica and Gill Sans are both sans serif fonts. Helvetica has a larger set-width than Gill Sans. The foot of the "a" in helvetica is consistent in weight throughout. The foot of the "a" in Gill Sans tapers towards the end. Helvetica appears to be more geometric and utilizes a higher x-height.

Type Identification - Week 1

Franklin Gothic  +  Futura

Franklin Gothic is much heavier than Futura. Futura is very geometric while Franklin utilizes a more natural approach. The lower case "j" in Futura has a straight descender while Franklin's has a curvilinear one. The peaks in Futura come to a point; Franklin's seem to have a plateau effect.
